The Almeida Is God [dot] Com Manifesto

Even if you consider yourself a fan of 24, you might be wondering what in the world prompted us to create this site. Who are these crazy Tony fans? You might be thinking we are seriously obsessive compulsive fans (which we are) in need of serious professional help (which we might be, but we don't think so). We know we're kinda hardcore. Allow us to provide some insight.

First, let's talk about 24. Our relationship with this show could only be described as a love affair of epic proportions. Over the years, there have been many gritty dramas to grace the small screen. Some were focused on aesthetic (CSI comes to mind), others on plot (think Law and Order), still others on characters and their relationships to the others in their world and their surroundings (think ER). But never before has one television series combined all of these elements into an intricate, fast-paced, action-packed plot driven by characters with depth, nuance and human motivations set in a beautifully fine-tuned, detail oriented, consistent aesthetic. Until 24.

24 is revolutionary for more than just its real-time format. It is so rare now in this era where advertising dollars and ratings rule everything to find a show that stays true to its artistic vision whatever the cost.

This site was born from a natural prediliction and drive on the part of all the individuals who run it to analyze, draw meaning and construct relevance from, and interpret the core themes and larger messages of 24. It is clear to anyone that this series is a lot more than just brawny boys with big guns, flashy explosions and hot chicks in tight shirts running around. There are endless aspects of it that beg for incisive, dedicated and communal appreciation, which is evidenced by the millions of fans from around the world who gather on the Internet to exchange their ideas about it. The individuals behind this website, Kasia in particular, believe so strongly in 24's artistic achievement, in its cultural relevance, in the universal truths it speaks, that we felt compelled to become a hub for some of that communal appreciation and share our ideas about the show with the world. Some people think this compulsion indicates a disconnect from reality. We prefer to think of it as a connection with art and intelligent thinking.

All that being said, however, another simple fact remains: 24 *is* a TV show, after all. It's entertaining. We also believe that this website should be entertaining. We happen to think that critical analysis of a network TV series from a somewhat academic perspective is entertaining. We also happen to think that laughing and poking fun at things (including ourselves) is entertaining. That's why you have to approach this website with an open mind and a sense of humour. Don't bother sending us e-mails about how weird or sad or screwed up we are for feeling the way we do about 24. We know it's weird, but it makes us happy. And we know it makes at least some of you happy too.

This website was first launched on January 19, 2004. It has been operating unimpeded for 2 years. The layout and presentation was designed by Kasia Gawlak, who also produces about 90% of the content and maintains the technical aspects of the site as well. Sometimes, when Kasia is off gallavanting on vacations, Matt takes care of updates.

This site is in no way officially endorsed or sponsored by the Fox Network or anyone directly associated with the production of 24. This is purely a fan pursuit, for fun and not profit. However, if for some reason someone associated with 24 would want to give us jobs that relate in some way to 24 based on something we said on this website, let us save you some time: our answer is FUCK YES!
