The 24 Slang Dictionary

You will find throughout this site various 24-slang we use on a regular basis (mostly in debriefs). Just in case the meanings of the terms we've used are lost on you, here is the guide to AIG slang. This is a continual work in progress.

ABWY - acronym that stands for Almeida Be With You. This term is generally used during MSN conversations as a substitute for "goodbye."

AAWY - acronym that stands for And Also With You. The appropriate response when someone tells you ABWY.

american where the fuck is Tony - describes when 24 is pre-empted on a Tuesday so FOX can show yet ANOTHER extend-o-episode "American Idol" vomit-fest.

bastraku - a bastard, but in Serbian. Adopted in hommage to Ted Cofell. For example, Mike Novick was the biggest bastraku of s2.

beroglide/beroglided - losing your breath because of being injured or because something is so shocking and/or upsetting. At the end of March, Matt suffered a completely unpredicted and bizarre collapse of his lung and was hospitalized. Kasia wondered why she hadn't talked to him for over a week, when she finally talked to him and he told her about his lung, she immediately exclaimed "BEROGLIDE!" Beroglide was the fictional drug used in s2 by Kingsley's henchman to torture Jack. Its effects? Collapsed lungs and an inability to breath.

black queen - our pet name for Nina Myers. Spawned from discussion of creating a 24-themed chess board.

brotherhood - the unique and unbreakable bond of intense friendship, loyalty and trust that exists between Jack Bauer and Tony Almeida

Cofell music - the particularly memorable strings-based musical theme first introduced in s1 10-11 AM and again reprised briefly in s2 9-10AM.

dark Marie - Marie as a brunette badass terrorist bitch.

dark Jack - when Jack does something ruthless and harsh.

dark Palmer - when David does something morally questionable

debrief - discussion of the latest episode of 24 on MSN Messenger immediately after it has aired MST. Debrief participants are Kasia, Matt and Kat.

Fakebelkin - fairly self-explanatory. Our pet name for Jonathan the assassin.

Fakeyork - fairly self-explanatory. Our pet name for Kevin Carroll.

Federal Soul Patch - the future title of Optican's debut album. See Optican.

FHTMA - acronym that stands for Flaming Hot Tony Michelle Action. Officially describes the scene in season 2 when Tony and Michelle kiss, but can also be used to describe any hot action between T/M.

gainesed - when a villian who has been at center stage is killed off to make way for the "bigger fish". The term was coined after Ira Gaines from Season 1. For example, we fully anticipated the Salazars to be gainesed.

happy holy day (HHD) - the standard greeting to your fellow fans when you first talk to them on the day that a new episode of 24 is scheduled to air.

happy holy eve (HHE) - the standard greeting to your fellow fans when you first talk to them on the day before a new episode of 24 is scheduled to air.

Jack/Nina Action (JNA) - any scene involving interaction between Jack and Nina, but generally applied to seasons 2 + 3, after Jack discovered Nina's betrayal

Jack/Tony Action (JTA) - when Jack and Tony collaborate on an assignment or generally interact in an exciting way

Loonie Lonnie - that militant dude who tries to imprison Kim in his underground bomb shelter full of guns and grenades and knives in s2. Term was actually lifted from an episode of Felicity when Javier tries out for a Loonie Lonnie's Mattress Emporium commercial. When Loonie Lonnie was introduced into the plot, that stuck with me.

OMA - acronym that stands for Oh My Almeida. A substitute for OMG. Sometimes expanded to OMFA in very exclamatory circumstances. You can figure that one out for yourselves.

Optican - the name of Matt and Kasia's future musical duo, named after Alan Optican from DoD.

preclock - the brief final scene, usually two minutes long at most, that occurs between the final 4-part split screen of the episode and the boop-beep of the clock signaling the episode's end.

s1 - abbreviation for Season One. Same rules apply for s2, s3, s4 + s5.

SNA - acronym that stands for Serious Nina Action. The term was coined after Nina's character left in season 2 and the resulting discussion of wanting her to return to provide SNA. This term is usually used along the lines of "I need some SNA", however can also be used to describe Nina Action which has just occured, as in "that was some SNA."

state of the where the fuck is Tony - when 24 is pre-empted so George Bush can deliver his lame propaganda-fest (otherwise known as the state of the union address). This occurence is particularly traumatizing for those of us in Canada, as both of the owners of AIG are, because WE DON'T CARE about Bush's propaganda. We just want 24!

the big chair - if a character is in "the big chair" it means they are in command of CTU. Coined literally after that big plush chair in the big-boss loft office.

the ghost of Victor Drazen - often abbreviated as TGOVD. When your computer suddenly has phantom technical difficulties and won't behave itself for no apparent reason, the ghost of Victor Drazen has possessed your computer. The ghost of Victor Drazen may also inhabit other things that tend to malfunction, like cars or stereo equipment. Originated during the recording of the 24 season 1 ultimate fan commentary when for no explicable reason whatsoever the internal mic on kasia's computer stopped working. In the commentary for the episode immediately following this happening, Kasia remarked that "the ghost of Victor Drazen just completely destroyed my computer." The term just stuck.

the Holy Trinity - Nina, Tony and Jack. In some bizarre kind of allegorical way, these three characters represent a Biblical/Mythic paradigm of hell, heaven and earth (pure evil, pure good and the human element in between). This paradigm is essential to the most basic themes at the heart of 24, which is why these three are the Holy Trinity. They are also the three most interesting characters on the show (perhaps apart from Mason, who left us far too soon).

tranq dart music - the really cool spanish guitar instrumental used during s1 12-1AM when Jack shoots Mason in the leg with a tranquilzer gun.

villain twins - Kat's twin sons, Victor and Peter. Coined as such because they share their names with the two major villains of s1 and s2.

white knight - pet name for Tony Almeida, also spawned from discussion of 24-themed chess board. Also the title of a 24-related poem about Tony.
